Entering the front door and finding yourself in front of a large mural by artist Keith Haring does not necessarily mean you are inside an art gallery or an important museum. In the heart of New York's cosmopolitan TriBeCa district, this loft, which jealously guards one of the American artist's first works created in 1979, is currently on sale for $7.9 million (about €6.5 million). Haring, who was a global icon of the pop generation, graffiti and street culture in the Big Apple in the 1980s, was a student at the New York School of Visual Arts at the time. To the amazement of those present, the work was brought to light during renovation work in 2007. The building of which this unique flat is a part, dating back to 1893, is the renowned American Thread Building, the first industrial building in TriBeCa to be converted to residential and therefore listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The loft now boasts two bedrooms, four bathrooms, a dining room, kitchen, gym and office, but the living room is the undisputed star, with its eight-metre high ceilings, cast-iron columns, elegant arched windows and, of course, Keith Haring's artwork.
